Granados: Cuentos de la juventud; Bocetos; Moresque y arabe; Sardana

Hungarian-born, British by adoption, Thomas Rajna seems the ideal pianist for Granados – limpid, elegant and warm. This is one of seven discs he has made of Granados’s complete piano music, and it consists of minor pieces, including the composer’s first opus, Cuentos de la juventud (Tales for the Young). If the title recalls Schumann, the music doesn’t, and the same goes for the descriptive pieces in Bocetos (Sketches). The disc is quite short and, despite its mild charm, I think its appeal will be limited. Adrian Jack
