Hoddinott: Piano Sonata No. 6; Piano Sonata No. 7; Piano Sonata No. 8; Piano Sonata No. 9; Piano Sonata No. 10

This second volume from Nimbus brings us to the tenth of Hoddinott’s 12 piano sonatas, and a thread is traceable from the first to the last. His style owes something to Alan Rawsthorne (a close friend for many years), and, like Rawsthorne, he sometimes uses 12-tone rows which he doesn’t develop serially. His fast movements are often headlong toccatas, the slow ones introspective, but the argument is always taut. Martin Jones is a persuasive advocate. Wadham Sutton
