Howells/Stevens

Both Herbert Howells and Bernard Stevens taught composition at the Royal College of Music, though Howells, whose reputation rests chiefly on his religious choral music, is the better known of the two. Filsell’s programme spans Howells’s career and stylistic range, finding the essential wit of Gadabout. The recording, if a little dry, captures the music’s dynamics and its expressive imageries. Howells is well complimented by the three Stevens works. Terry Barfoot
