Liszt, Ginastera, Ravel Barber, Shostakovich & Balakirev

When Terence Judd met his untimely end off Beachy Head in 1979, we lost not just one of the most promising young pianists but one who was already a consummate virtuoso. The previous year the 21-year-old had been placed fourth in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. These stunning performances, recorded live, like Tchaikovsky’s First and Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concertos, also on Chandos, show that Judd might as well have walked off with first prize. The playing is razor-sharp, brilliant and big.

The playing is razor-sharp, brilliant and big. The dark depths of the two big sonatas are plumbed, too, and the disc ends most movingly with Ravel’s mournful Oiseaux tristes, immaculately controlled and exquisitely shaded. Adrian Jack
