Billy Mayerl, master of the syncopated piano miniature, made much of his reputation from artful transcriptions of show songs and other short numbers. This third in Priory’s survey by the doyen of present-day Mayerl exponents, Eric Parkin, includes such numbers by Rodgers & Hart, Kern & Hammerstein II and Coward. They are all a bit samey heard en masse, but individually are a delight, the recording only marred by the rather impersonal and resonant acoustic. Matthew Rye
