Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Ravel & Scriabin

These performances come from concerts given mostly in the late Sixties and early Seventies, and it is worth putting up with the rather clangorous piano sound (not to mention the distinctly bronchitic audiences) for the sake of some exceptional pianism. Mozart, perhaps, was not quite Gilels’s thing – the slow movement of the great A minor Sonata, K310, in particular, is heavy and portentous; but the affection and warmth he brought to Schubert and Schumann are captivating.

There is, too, some splendidly forthright Beethoven-playing, including a fine Moonlight Sonata; and a pellucid account of Ravel’s Jeux d’eau. Here was a real artist, and a real communicator.
