Pachelbel, Bach, Sweelinck, Heiller, Eben, etc

The disc divides between dance-based pieces from the 17th century, including variations by Pachelbel and Sweelinck, and similar from the second half of the 20th, framed by Bach’s ‘Jig’ Fugue, played both on the first and final tracks in contrasted registrations – flutes, then reeds and mixtures. The tempo for the Bach is perfect, the bouncing rhythm immaculate, and throughout, Margaret Phillips plays with razor-sharp clarity. Still, the complexity of Gaston Litaize’s Prélude et danse fuguée inhibits the naturalness of its recurring rumba beat.

The moderate-sized Peter Collins organ of 1993 at Oakham School yields a vivid array of colours in an apparently dry acoustic. Adrian Jack
