Reger: Solo Violin Sonatas, Op. 91/1, 3, 5 & 6

In composing seven sonatas for unaccompanied violin, Reger was inviting an inevitable comparison with Bach. Yet the composer fully meets the challenge with a sequence of inventive movements that effect a neat balance between Baroque imitation and more tortuously chromatic late-Romantic harmony. The music’s evident attractions are further enhanced by some wonderfully fluent playing from the young German violinist, Ulrike-Anima Mathé, who extracts the maximum amount of character and tonal variety from each sonata.
