Schoenberg: Klavierstücke, Opp. 11, 19, 23

Schoenberg’s greatest claim to fame is the invention of the 12-tone system, but his earlier works were a natural development of the Classical and Romantic traditions. It’s particularly useful to have the series of piano fragments, in chronological sequence, the early ones suggesting Brahms and Wagner, the whole set a microcosm of the progress of his thinking. The warm acoustic is more suitable for the ‘Romantic’ pieces than the later, grittier ones. A most rewarding disc. Wadham Sutton
