Scriabin: Piano Sonata No. 2 in G sharp minor, Op. 19; Piano Sonata No. 3 in F sharp minor, Op. 23; 12 Etudes, Op. 8; Two Nocturnes, Op. 5

This, the second volume in a survey of Scriabin piano music from Gordon Fergus-Thompson, concentrates on music from the 1890s, when the composer was gradually defining his own distinctive style out of the influences of Chopin and Tchaikovsky. Fergus-Thompson’s playing is very fine indeed, particularly in the more fiery movements of the Third Sonata, cleanly articulated but still warm and atmospheric. The sound is ideal. Matthew Rye
