Strauss: Five Piano Pieces, Op. 3; Sonata for solo piano, Op. 5; Stimmungsbilder, Op. 9

Fitting neatly on to a single disc, the young Strauss’s surviving piano works are likeable when imitating Schumann and Mendelssohn in the mood-pieces, less so Beethoven in the Sonata. Vladar preserves a vital freshness throughout; both piano and recorded sound have an admirable limpidity. David Nice
