Widor, Franck, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Vierne, Liszt, Schumann, Karg-Elert, etc

This collection brings together recordings made during the Eighties, mostly on the Rieger organ of Ratzeburg Cathedral, but also Franck’s Three Chorales on the Cavaillé-Coll organ of St Sernin, Toulouse, and two short pieces on the Royal Festival Hall organ. I find I warm easily both to the honesty and integrity of Hurford’s approach to this repertoire, and to his immaculate articulation and stylish delivery of the music.

In extended items such as the Allegro from Widor’s Sixth Symphony and Franck’s Second Chorale, Hurford’s taut grasp of musical structure enables the music to unfold in long, sweeping paragraphs and in shorter pieces by Brahms and Vierne, sentimentality is avoided through judicious choice of tempi.
