Overnight is a full trio album with bassist Riccardo Del Fra joining the brilliant duo. He’s a great asset and also contributes two compositions: his ‘Between the Lines’ is very fast and has a tricky theme which keeps everybody on their toes.
Wheeler plays open trumpet on this track, which makes a pleasant change from the Romantic melancholy of the flugelhorn, and Taylor plays the most amazing piano lines, clusters and splashes – all three men are at the cutting edge of jazz.
Wheeler’s ‘Old Ballad’ is a duo performance – it’s a very affecting piece with a beautifully focused flugelhorn solo. Finally, Del Fra’s romantic ballad ‘And in Her Eyes’ in waltz time inspires a superb piano solo by Taylor.
