Lassus: Villanelle; Moresche

‘Everything you ever wanted to hear about sex, but could never find on a CD of early music’ is the marketing slogan for this disc, and had these poems been written today they would surely have been censured for indecent language and racism. The Villanelle positively ooze with sexual innuendo. Hardly Lassus’s most interesting works, but they are brought to life here with panache, exuberance and wit. Kate Bolton
