Loewe: Lieder &Ballads, Vol. 9

Prégardien makes a marvellous job of Loewe’s ghoulish Scottish ballads, and of Goethe (Loewe’s ‘Erlkönig’ makes a fascinating contrast to Schubert’s setting), while Garben’s skittish accompaniment works wonders for Heine (‘Der Asra’). Fischer-Dieskau and Fassbaender remain the touchstones, but this CPO series brings Loewe’s wonderful Lieder gorgeously alive. Roderic Dunnett
