Bernstein: Halil; Four Sabras

An interesting disc entitled Leonard Bernstein: A Jewish Legacy mops up a number of the composer’s shorter works not featured on disc elsewhere. Again, liturgical and secular choral settings provide the main framework, the most striking discovery being the 1945 Hashkiveinu, given an outstandingly vibrant performance by Hans-Peter Blochwitz and the BBC Singers. The rest of the disc doesn’t quite reach this level of proficiency, partly because the recorded sound in some items lacks real presence and warmth.
