As refreshment, an enchanting disc of Eugen Jochum conducting LPO in Haydn's 100th and 101st Symphonies in performances that atleast equal Beecham's for panache and wit. The size of the orchestra may come as a shock to contemporary ears, but so I hope will the energy, phrasing, and love of every note of this music. And Hindermith's Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber utterly belies its daunting title, Jochum getting the LSO to show itself off to dazzling effect.
