It should be no surprise to find that the band bearing the name of late bass legend, Jaco Pastorius, is equally inspired by the unlikely combination of Glenn Miller and Sun Ra. Despite his successful solo work, Pastorius is best remembered for his contribution to the pioneering fusion outfit Weather Report, so you’ll find some of his fellow alumni listed as performers and composers here. Overall, it’s a star-studded list, with names like Brecker, Erskine, Sandoval and Thielemans dominating the roster. These pieces are mostly by the late bassman and are belled-and-whistled for this large unit by way of some judicious arrangements. The result is impressively tight, big band fusion recorded with a degree of digital glare, although the parallel SACD version may turn out to be a better bet in this respect. Roger Thomas.
