Philippe Cohen Solal, Eduardo Makaroff (guitar), Christoph H MŸller (bass, keyboards)

It’s been half a decade since this Paris-based trio successfully dragged Argentinean tango into the 21st century, adding dub effects, digital beats and vocal samples to create a whole new genre known as ‘electro-tango’. Their 2001 debut shifted around a million copies, but competitors like Bajofondo Tango Club and Tango Crash have moved things on since, with only one patchy remix compilation (2004’s Inspiración-Espiración ) to satisfy Gotan product cravings.

Lunático is better, thanks to collaborations with many of Buenos Aires’s finest musicians and guests such as speak-singer Juan Carlos Cacérès, pianist Gustavo Beytelmann and Rudolph and Nini Flores. It’s a more ‘organic’ exploration of tango’s roots and my only gripe is that regular singer Cristina Villalonga is regularly flat.
