Perhaps remembering the young Brahms’s Op. 2, the 16-year-old Strauss’s B minor Sonata has the temerity to invoke Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. It’s accomplished (though rhetoric and ambition outstrip substance), and, underlining debts to Schumann and Mendelssohn, Veselka does it proud. Paul Riley
