Schütz, Gabrieli

For a shorter, pre-prandial summary of the Nativity, Schütz’s Weihnachtshistorien (Christmas Story) should be in every Christmas collection. Its short duration (35 minutes) does not imply superficiality, especially with a tenor as freshly communicative as the youthful John Mark Ainsley singing the Evangelist, single-handedly relating most of the story, effectively punctuated chorally. Four vocally resplendent Christmas Motets by Gabrieli (Schütz’s teacher) are included as the coupling.
