Stanton Moore

When people think of New Orleans music most think of the polyrhythmic flow of trad jazz. But the Big Easy made another contribution to jazz development: the hard, bright style of funk pioneered by The Meters in the mid-1960s. That regional jazz-funk tradition is still evolving and local drummer Stanton Moore is one of those taking it forward, with what’s been dubbed ‘nouveau second line’. Recorded in the town’s Preservation Hall, III has Moore powering the trio through a programme of rock-steady originals.

Recorded in the town’s Preservation Hall, III has Moore powering the trio through a programme of rock-steady originals. Robert Walter’s Hammond B3 organ grinds with that authentic greasy sound while Will Bernard wails on swampy lead guitar. Melody is never far away, however, and the churchy version of Abdullah Ibrahim’s ‘Water From An Ancient Well’ is sublime. Garry Booth
