Strauss: Ein Heldenleben

Stripped of the palpable sense of occasion which visually bears Jansons’s heroic Amsterdam inauguration aloft on DVD (full review on p90) this top-notch Heldenleben fights a different battle. The Concertgebouw armour shines throughout, but its portly wearer lollops between complacency and eloquence. It only goes to show that the more seriously you take Strauss’s mock-epic, the shallower parts of it can seem. David Nice
