Various: Golestan

The liner-notes to golestan only list track titles, performers, and the provenance of the melodies in this cross-cultural collaboration recorded in Norway. But its fusion of Indian, Persian, and Chinese instrumental styles really does work. The frame-drum and santur zither make a nice ground from which the erhu fiddle can take wing, while the pipa and tabla meld brightly. But though this piece of boundary crossing is pleasing, that’s the limit of its achievement: music can only move us deeply if it operates in a shared social or cultural context, and this does not. Michael Church.
