The other ‘poetic’ title released by Cedille, poetic inspirations, refers this time to works for oboe, viola and piano inspired by poetry: the high-Romantic Schilflieder after Lenau by Liszt’s friend August Klughardt, two Rhapsodies after Rollinat by the German-American Charles Loeffler, and – a rewarding discovery – a 1920s piece by the English composer Felix White inspired by Marvell’s The Nymph’s Complaint for the Death of her Fawn. Hindemith’s Trio with heckelphone (or, here, bass oboe) completes the programme in more prosaic style. Performances could sparkle a little more, but the overall impression is pleasing. Anthony Burton
