Nyman: Noises, Sounds & Sweet Airs

This began as La princesse de Milan, an opera-ballet for Karine Saporta, the choreographer on Greenaway’s film Prospero’s Books. Milan was not based on Nyman’s music for the film, but is an entirely new score which now, without dancers, has become a Tempest opera. The ‘story’ is hard to follow because there is no role characterisation by voice and many words are hard to decipher. Nyman’s ear for instrumental colour is, as ever, astute in his lush, throbbing score. Annette Morreau
