What distinguishes this 1977 performance from many rival recordings is that its conductor was concerned to present as accurate an account of Donizetti’s score as possible. Montserrat Caballé, an intensely moving Lucia, experiences no difficulties with the higher original keys, producing a limpid tone and a pure legato line throughout. The young Carreras is a magnificent Edgardo and López-Cobos conducts authoritatively. Highly recommended. Charles Osborne
