Falla: La vida breve

This South American recording of Falla’s great tragedy is a muted affair. It is well performed – Marta Senn, particularly, is a sweet-toned Salud – but it lacks the searing intensity needed to make the opera come alive. Even the gravel-voiced cantaor of Enrique Iglesias does not imbue the proceedings with the dynamism and violence inherent in the score. The star-studded DG disc (Berganza, Carreras, Nafé and Pons) is a much better bet. Claire Wrathall
