Holst: The Wandering Scholar; At the Boar's Head

Holst never achieved in his operas the success of S¯avitri. These two short comedies – one a Chaucerian tale of a farmer’s wife and her cleric lover who get their comeuppance at the hands of a wandering scholar refused food, the other a miraculous matching of Shakespeare’s Falstaffian scenes to existing folksongs – nevertheless have their charms. These classic recordings, superbly cast, make a welcome return to the catalogue in this apt coupling. Matthew Rye
