Mozart: Thamos, König in Agypten; Der Schauspieldirektor

Mozart’s Thamos consists of three choruses and five instrumental pieces composed as incidental music for a dull and dignified play by Tobias von Gebler. The pieces are interesting mainly for the way they adumbrate the more solemn aspects of Die Zauberflöte, but Der Schauspieldirektor is, apart from its dull finale, a sparkling affair, with two delightful arias for its rival leading ladies. These are very acceptable and stylishly conducted performances. Charles Osborne
