Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro

Though this 1958 recording is a studio production, the characters sometimes seem so mobile it makes you dizzy and Figaro, in particular, gets around enough for several people. The Vienna Philharmonic makes a lovely sound, but again its contribution is tinkered with. If you want this set, it will be for the excellently sung Susanna of Peters and Figaro of Tozzi, hardly bettered. Nor was the Countess ever more appealing than when incarnated by the matchless della Casa. Adrian Jack
