Sinopoli

Here is a sumptuous reminder that Sinopoli was capable of practising in his 1981 opera the thick but detailed textures he preached as a conductor. His heroine traces her musical line of descent from Salome and Lulu; but Lou Salomé was also a historical figure on the margins of greatness – the complicated muse of Nietzsche, Rilke and Freud who faced her demons and lost her virginity at 40. The two suites from the opera contrast sustained symphonic writing with pastiche, and are luxuriously cast here with the luminous Popp and subtle Carreras underpinned by beautifully lit orchestral playing.

We can only think, as we listen, of what Sinopoli might have made of the Berg operas he never lived to record. David Nice
