Wagner: Die Feen

Wagner’s first opera treats two familiar topoi: redemption and the forbidden question. Musically, Die Feen has many original touches and deserves an occasional outing. This set, however – abysmally sung, flabbily conducted and recorded live in the Teatro Comunale in Cagliari – will win it few friends. Sawallisch on Orfeo is infinitely preferable. Barry Millington
