Aho: Symphony No. 9; Cello Concerto

Realising that the trombone’s natural home is in rather than in front of the orchestra, Kalevi Aho has created a satisfying and compelling piece for the instrument in his Ninth Symphony. The soloist is only one figure in an immense sound-world, sometimes at odds though finally friends with his environment. But what a sound-world it is: of polyrhythm, polytonality, polystylism and huge uninhibited contrasts. Coupled with a pessimistic cello concerto. Christopher Mowat
