Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor; Academic Festival Overture

Comparing this recording of the Academic Festival Overture with that by Sawallisch and the LPO (below), one finds a sharper rhythmic profile and more breathing space in the sound balance. The same acoustic characterises the BBC Philharmonic's very fine interpretation of the First Symphony. The Andante soars to passionate heights after the unforced lyricism of its opening, while the third movement achieves a serene radiance. In the Finale Herbig exerts a majestic control, and one feels that victory has been hard won and is thoroughly deserved. Anthony Payne
