Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 (Romantic)

Haitink was relatively new to his Amsterdam appointment at the time of this recording and one senses his respect for the great orchestra's fine tradition of Bruckner playing. He doesn't entirely catch the mystery of the opening string tremolandos and horn calls but quickly rises to both the movement's grandeur and its Schubertian delicacy. The Andante's weary tread is well captured and there is no doubting his grasp of the elusive art of placing a Bruckner climax with complete conviction.

The hunting scherzo is a model of thrilling virtuosity and the finale never sags on its way to a splendid apotheosis. David Wilkins
