Bruckner: Symphony No. 0 in D minor; Adagio from String Quintet in F

Bruckner’s ‘Nullified’ symphony is no flawless masterpiece, but Skrowaczewski directs it with such affection, vitality and understanding that the beautiful and original things firmly eclipse the occasional dull and clumsy moments. Playing is just as persuasive in the Adagio from the String Quintet (arranged by Skrowaczewski for orchestral strings), though the recorded sound is slightly cloudy. Stephen Johnson
