Crusell: Clarinet Concerto No. 1; Clarinet Concerto No. 2; Clarinet Concerto No. 3

Crusell was a Finnish composer and virtuoso clarinettist, whose clarinet concertos, written at the beginning of the last century (1811, 1816 and 1829 – information not given in the notes) have kept his name alive. He studied in Berlin and Paris and was a thoroughly professional composer, although these pretty works are not free of a certain eclecticism (there are echoes of Mozart, Weber and Rossini). The performances are delightful – fresh, spontaneous and with a real touch of poetry in the slow movements. Ideal summer fare and a real contribution to the CD catalogue. HC Robbins Landon
