Delius: Brigg Fair; A Song before Sunrise; On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring; The Walk to the Paradise Garden

This latest release in the Royal Philharmonic Collection is good value as a basic introduction to a range of Delius’s orchestral music. Although overall the interpretations lack the sheer sensuality of Beecham’s, there are excellent solos from the principals, and a luxuriant Song before Sunrise. The sound, though, is disappointing: a rustling accompanies the Walk to the Paradise Garden as it sets off, and the fortissimos can sometimes come across harshly. Janet Banks
