COMPOSERS: Dutilleux
LABELS: Chandos
WORKS: Métaboles; Tout un monde lointain; Mystère de l’instant
PERFORMER: Boris Pergamenshikov (cello); BBC Philharmonic/Yan Pascal Tortelier
Anyone who has heard the BBC Philharmonic and Tortelier in the first two instalments of their Dutilleux series will already be coveting this release. They will not be disappointed. The benefits of having a work such as Métaboles as part of their repertoire are readily apparent. Attention to detail is meticulous, but it is much more than simply hearing all the individual notes. Each member of the orchestra seems to understand the position of each utterance within the context of its phrase, its movement and the architecture of the work as a whole. This captivates the attention from the first exhortations of the opening ‘Incantoire’ to the work’s explosive climax of the concluding ‘Flamboyant’.

Boris Pergamenshikov is a commanding soloist in Tout un monde lointain, displaying the gamut of emotions from intoxicating lyricism to driving passion. Occasionally he works a little bit too hard, but it would be churlish to regard this as a significant drawback. The occasionally whimsical ‘snapshots’ of Mystère de l’instant are delivered with panache to complete a very enjoyable disc. Christopher Dingle
