Frankel: Symphony No. 7; Symphony No. 8; Overture to a Ceremony; A Shakespeare Overture

Frankel’s last symphonies are characteristically lyrical within his muscular 12-note idiom. The Eighth is more immediately attractive, containing a greater contrast between slow and fast music than the Seventh, but both repay concentrated listening. Performances are sometimes a little scrappy. Martin Cotton
