Goldschmidt: Passacaglia; The Comedy of Errors Overture; Ciaccona sinfonica; Chronica; Les petits adieux; Rondeau

The same orchestra plays equally well for the nonagenarian composer in the vivacious Comedy of Errors Overture. Their version, taken at a more relaxed tempo than on the rival CPO recording, is preferable in terms of instrumental balance and characterisation of the melodic line.

Their version, taken at a more relaxed tempo than on the rival CPO recording, is preferable in terms of instrumental balance and characterisation of the melodic line. Nonetheless, the CPO disc is still worth investigation for the inclusion of the Greek Suite – a sequence of skilful folksong arrangements composed during the darkest days of World War II, even though the faint-hearted will probably recoil from having to sit through Schulhoff’s excessively noisy and garrulous ballet score.
