Handel: Water Music; Music for the Royal Fireworks

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra offers a persuasive account of the complete three suites of the Water Music, coupled with the Fireworks Music. Although the orchestra plays on modern instruments, it takes stock of period practice. The tempi are brisk without detracting from the stateliness of the grander movements; nevertheless, the contrasts are nicely achieved: the G major Suite from the Water Music is particularly gentle and intimate. A good choice for those wanting a modern-instrument recording. William Humphreys-Jones
