Ives: Holidays; Central Park in the Dark

Ives described his Holidays Symphony as an aural panorama of American life around 1880, and he worked at it, on and off, between 1904 and 1913. The outer movements reflect the untroubled lives of simple people, but the central pair present considerable contrast, with intricate rhythms and a sort of instrumental verismo. The shifts of mood and kaleidoscopic changes of texture are well captured on this recording, which would make an excellent introduction to Ives’s music. Wadham Sutton
