Seta Tanyel continues her impressive Scharwenka series with dynamic readings of the Second and Third Concertos that are superbly articulated and full of thunder and poetry. (Collins has already released seven CDs comprising piano and chamber works and the First Piano Concerto.) Both concertos are considerable works lasting about forty minutes. They are heroic in scale with many exciting bravura passages contrasted with others of fine lyrical beauty. Many influences are discernible including Chopin, Liszt, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Both are attractive and accessible but No. 3, written in 1891, 18 years after No. 2, is much stronger and more assured. It also has a memorable theme which would make this concerto world famous if it was used to score a film. Ian Lace
