Scharwenka/Sauer

Confronted with the unfailing quality – and originality – of the material unearthed by Hyperion so far in this series, one can only point an accusing finger at the lazy conservatism of promoters who are unwilling or incapable of resurrecting these pieces in the concert hall. The two concertos given new life on this CD are grandly conceived and tuneful in the best Romantic tradition. If they are occasionally formulaic, does that really matter? Christopher Lambton
