Schumann: Overtures

There’s passion in these performances, but Shambadal ‘Mahlerises’ the masterpiece of the set, the Manfred Overture, pulling tempi about and leaning too heavily on certain phrases. While it’s good to hear the orchestral Schumann taken seriously, each performance is more convincing in parts than as a whole. The sound is hard-edged, high woodwind and brass especially penetrating.
