Tippett: Symphony No. 2; New Year Suite

Hickox’s Tippett cycle goes from strength to strength. The notoriously complex rhythms of this Stravinskian symphony hold no fears for the players of the Bournemouth SO (though admittedly lacking the welcome sense of danger in Colin Davis’s pioneering LSO account). And, augmented by saxophones and electric guitars, they revel in the rich sonorities of the suite from Tippett’s space-age opera New Year, music all the more enjoyable when distanced from its embarrassing rap element and slangy libretto.
