Vaughan Williams/Delius/Finzi

With the notable exception of a beautifully tender slow movement, Vaughan Williams’s Piano Concerto is a surprisingly percussive work whose sinewy writing can be compared to that of Bartók and Prokofiev. Continental influences (Grieg and Liszt) also abound in Delius’s Piano Concerto, whilst Finzi provides a welcome contrast with a heartfelt exploration of the English pastoral tradition. Piers Lane has the necessary interpretative acumen to deal with the differing demands of all these works, and he is supported by outstanding orchestral playing and marvellous sound. Erik Levi
