Vieuxtemps

The Belgian Romantic composer and virtuoso violinist Henry Vieuxtemps is now known almost exclusively for his violin concertos, two of which are performed on this enjoyable disc by Misha Keylin with the measured, if sometimes muted, support of the Janácek Philharmonic under Dennis Burkh. The works are formally cautious but, despite their many bravura passages, are shot through with great lyrical invention.

Keylin’s technical flair and sureness of tone are heard to best effect in the Third Concerto, which Vieuxtemps’s younger compatriot Ysaÿe described as a great poem – that poetic quality is realised not only in the breadth of the long first movement but more particularly in the song-like Adagio, which Keylin invests with a warm and lyrical poise.
